In 1985 a satellite base at Dragons Peak in the Drakensberg was established in order for the 87 Helicopter Flying School to conduct their mountain flying training. The base was named after the officer commanding at the time, Cmdt. C. L. van Wyngaard.
The base hosts four SAAF's Helicopter Squadrons up to four times a year when they run mountain flying training camps for their student pilots. The base was recently also commonly used by school groups who come to the Drakensberg to enjoy the scenery and broad range of activities on offer in the area.
This is the perfect venue for nature lovers, bird watchers, adventure junkies and mountaineers alike. This old Mountain Base at the Dragon Peaks airfield has been revamped to a backpackers. We are situated along the Sterkspruit River, within walking distance of the Dragon Peaks resort and its facilities, yet far enough away to have a sense of privacy.
Capable of accommodating 105 guests. We have 20 2-Bed Cabins leading out to the Garden for those cabins along the river bank, with their own ablution block. As well as two Dorms with their own shared ablution block within the Base itself.
Also on site is a T.V Lounge & fully equipped bar leading a patio, a dining room leading to the porch with the outdoor Braai facilities and a fully equipped kitchen too. Designated chilling areas have also been setup for your enjoyment after an eventful day of sightseeing & adventuring.
We cater for groups, couples & singles looking for some clean and affordable accommodation. Our friendly staff are onhand to assist with your maximum relaxation and enjoyment when you book your stay with us.
